Passports stolen in Kallithea found

80 of the 81 passports stolen in Kallithea were found in a bag next to a trash can in the metropolitan area of Agios Panteleimonas.

According to ΕΛΑΣAlmost all passports stolen on 05/15/23 from a car of a courier company in Kallithea, were discovered last night by a janitor in the municipality of Athens, who called the police. In total, 80 (out of 81) stolen passports were found.

Recall that earlier a 54-year-old foreigner was detained in the case, who stole two bags with passports from a courier mail machine. And, as it turned out during the investigation, he sold them to two foreigners in one of the stores located in the Agios Panteleimonas area.

Prosecutor’s Office for Property Crimes of the Attica Security Directorate continues to investigate the identity of two other foreigners.

Recall, as the Athens News previously wrote, the police authorities were alarmed theft of citizens’ passports from the car of the post office. According to reports, the incident occurred on May 15 this year at 13:45 on El. Venizelou in the Athens district of Kalithea, when an ELTA employee driving a car stopped for a few minutes at a kiosk.

Unknown people entered the car and stole from there 2 bags with citizen’s passports. Cargo was sent by the passport office. It is reported that special carrying bags were equipped with a tracking system.

Probably unknown people were waiting for the postal worker, as their actions were organized. Judging by the panic that arose in the police, the tracking system was immediately blocked. (Blocking usually consists of placing the bag in a radio-protected container, such as Faraday cage. Professional smartphone thieves are familiar with these simple devices and use them all over the place.)

On the black market, an original Greek passport can cost up to 2,000 euros. Even if sold in bulk, the criminals got a solid booty. However, as experience shows, these could be gypsies who traditionally “herd” such drivers at kiosks and cafes, as happened more than once with acquaintances of the author of the publication.

While the driver, leaving the car “for a minute”, goes to the kiosk to buy something and leaves the doors unlocked, the attackers open them and drag the first object or bag they see. Similar situations can also occur at intersections, when gypsies run up to a stopped car, offering to wash the headlights or sell something. While the driver is distracted, they open the trunk or rear doors and drag what they have time. The only thing that stands out from this version is that the criminals have an analogue of the “Faraday cage”.

For reference: the easiest way to protect against such intruders is to close the central lock from the inside for the entire trip around the city. And if you get out of the car, even for a minute, you need to close the doors and windows.
