Colombia: Four children who survived a plane crash are found after a two-week search in the jungle

Three children – aged 13, 9 and 4 – and an 11-month-old baby survived during and after the plane crash. For two weeks they were in the rainforest.

How informs Reuters, the crash of the plane with 7 people on board occurred due to engine failure on May 1. All the adults died, their bodies were found, and the children were missing. According to the initial information of the Civil Aviation Authority, the children went to the jungle in search of salvation.

During the rescue operation, emergency workers, along with search dogs, found scraps of fruit that the children had consumed to survive and makeshift plant shelters. Aircraft, helicopters, firefighters participated in the operation. The children were found in the dense jungles of the Colombian province of Caqueta. Colombian President Gustavo Petr tweeted:

“After an intense search, our military found four children missing after the plane crash in Guaviara alive. This is a joy for the country.”

For two weeks the children roamed the jungle. The country’s Civil Aviation Authority speculated about how they managed to stay alive, CNN reports. The report says the photo from the crash site shows the aircraft’s raised tail painted blue and white. Its nose and front end crashed into dense jungle trees. It is assumed that then the engine and propeller came off, and then the aircraft fell to the ground.

The aircraft fell vertically and collided with the ground due to heavy braking and loss of control. The report suggests that the adults seated at the front of the aircraft were fatally injured in the crash:

“In the chart of injuries caused by the accident, fatal injuries were recorded to three passengers sitting in front. Including the pilot of the aircraft.”

The rear seats, where the children sat, were less affected by the impact. Two of the three seats occupied by the children remained undamaged. One child seat became detached from the aircraft structure. There is an assumption that the mother held the baby in her arms, and this helped him survive.
