Rest on the islands for the Greeks is becoming more and more “unbearable”. A family of 4 people, according to experts, will need about 4,000 euros for just 1 week.
With an 87% year-over-year increase in foreign tourist arrivals choosing the Greek islands for their holidays, travel, accommodation and food prices are prohibitive for most Greeks. According to the channel OPENthe basic holiday package has increased by 20% compared to last year, and the president of Heraklion hoteliers, Nikos Kokolakis, told the TV channel that accommodation prices have clearly risen.
4000 euros… for a vacation
For example, a family of four for six nights in a three-star hotel with transport, ferry tickets and food should spend 4,160 euros if they choose Paros, and 4,000 euros if they choose Naxos, and Sifnos will cost a little less, but still expensive – 3780 euros. “Prices are very high and the average Greek citizen cannot afford it,” a citizen told OPEN.
Looking for an alternative
Many Greeks take overland destinations, some go away for far fewer days, and also vacation in the summer houses (dachas, if any) of their friends or acquaintances to cut costs. Others choose exotic cheap destinations abroad. And only a small number of Greeks “deny themselves everything during the year” in order to save up for a summer vacation and enjoy a long vacation on the islands.
