"Queen of rock and roll" Tina Turner has died at the age of 83

World-famous American singer Tina Turner has died peacefully after a long illness, according to her spokesperson. She died at her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.

The world has lost a music legend and role model. The charismatic star, born in the USA, was one of the most beloved rock singers in the world. Her hit list includes “The Best”, “Proud Mary”, “Private Dancer”, “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and many other popular and beloved songs.

Anna May Bullock (real name of the singer) was born on November 26, 1939. In 1974, her first album, Tina Turns the Country On!, was released. (“Tina turns the whole country on”). And in 2000, the singer announced the end of her stage career, which lasted about 40 years.

Born in Tennessee to sharecropper parents, she first came to prominence as one of the backing vocalists in her husband’s band The Kings of Rhythm. She soon became the leader of the group, and the pair achieved commercial success with Fool in Love and It’s Gonna Work Out Fine, both charting in the US in the early 60s. Their other hits include 1973’s Nutbush City Limits, about the small town where Tina was born. But Ike’s physical and emotional abuse took its toll. It was he who changed her birth name, Anna May Bullock, to Tina Turner, a decision he made without her knowledge, one example of his controlling behavior.

Recalling her years with her husband, Tina wrote: “He used my nose like a punching bag so many times that I felt blood running down my throat when I sang.” After escaping from her abuser, she continued her career and became one of the biggest pop and rock stars of the 80s and 90s with hits like “Let’s Stay Together”, “Steam Windows”, “Private Dancer”, Theme James Bond “Golden Eye”, “I Don’t Want”.

For her creative work, Tina was awarded the Grammy Award 12 times, included in the list of “100 Greatest Singers of All Time” according to Rolling Stone magazine, and in 2021 was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the American city of Cleveland (State Ohio).

Nicknamed the queen of rock ‘n’ roll, Tina Turner became famous for her sometimes bawdy but always energetic stage performances and husky powerful vocals.

In 2013, Tina Turner decided to renounce her US citizenship and became a Swiss citizen. In recent years, writes Air Force, Turner suffered from health problems including cancer, stroke and kidney failure.

The death of the singer was announced on her official page on Instagram. The message reads: “With her music and boundless passion for life, she has captivated millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us his greatest legacy: his music.”
