SYRIZA: Simple Proportionality Failed, Target June Elections

Alexis Tsipras announced the convening of the SYRIZA-PS Central Committee next Wednesday, which will assess the results of the elections and take the next steps towards the June elections, which Alexis Tsipras announced at a meeting of the party’s executive apparatus.

According to party sources, “Everyone agreed that the June 25th election battle is now of paramount importance, and they appear to be determined to fight this battle far from introversion…”.

According to Greek edition sources cathimerini, at a meeting of the executive bureau of the PC SYRIZA, chaired by Alexis Tsipras, the first assessment of the results of the elections was made, and “the general conclusion was that in the last days before the elections there was a subtle strengthening of the New Democracy, and that the SYRIZA strategy of simple proportional representation had failed.” It goes on to say that “the parties of the small and progressive opposition, by discrediting mere PR and partnership, and by unilaterally attacking SYRIZA as it extended its hand for progressive rapprochement, set the stage for Mr. Mitsotakis’s strong right wing dominance.”

According to the same sources, “everyone agreed that the June 25th election battle was of paramount importance, and seemed determined to fight this battle, by no means introverted, in order for SYRIZA-PS to become a strong barrier to omnipotence and arrogance of the Mitsotakis government and at the same time did not serve those who want to deprive SYRIZA-PS of the leadership of the progressive pole in the country and replace it with a convenient two-party system.

In this context, “Tsipras announced the convening of a central committee next Wednesday, where the results of the elections will be assessed and the next steps outlined on the way to elections in June.”
