Alexis Tsipras: Preventing the rise of an out-of-control prime minister ruler (video)

“I will not give up in the midst of a difficult struggle,” Alexis Tsipras said in a statement following the meeting of the SYRIZA-PS executive bureau.

“In the next elections, we must, first of all, prevent the prospect of an all-powerful and uncontrollable ruler in the post of prime minister,” he notes.

Alexis Tsipras’ statement:

“I have learned to take responsibility in difficult times And not to give up the fight. I am here. I will not give up in the midst of a difficult struggle. Yesterday was election day. Today is the first day of the fight for the next election. Yesterday’s elections were a victory for the New Democracy, but at the same time, the proportional representation strategy failed.

The progressive forces to which we extended a hand of cooperation throughout the entire electoral period were almost exclusively against SYRIZA. And yesterday, at the moment of the right’s historic electoral victory, they rejoiced more than the New Democrats at the fall in SYRIZA’s numbers. We looked at the country. They looked at their field.

In the next elections, we must, above all, prevent the prospect of an all-powerful and unruly Prime Minister ruler. But also to protect the leading presence of the left in the political life of the country. Like an uncompromising force. SYRIZA, who came from afar and went far, has been and will remain here. As the main organ of progressive forces, the spokesman for popular and social interests. To protect the world of work. And prevent the restoration of a convenient systemic two-party system.

During the meeting, the first assessment of the election results was made. The general conclusion of all was that there had been a subtle rise in the Southwest in the final days before the elections, and that SYRIZA’s strategy of simple proportional representation had failed. The parties of the small and progressive opposition, by their disdain for simple proportional representation and partnership, and by their one-sided attack on SYRIZA at the very moment when it was stretching out its hand for progressive rapprochement, set the stage for Mr. Mitsotakis’ right-wing strong dominance.

They all agreed that the June 25th electoral battle is of paramount importance and seem determined to fight this battle, far from introversion, so that SYRIZA PS becomes a strong barrier to the omnipotence and arrogance of the Mitsotakis government. And at the same time, it has not rendered a service to those who want to remove SYRIZA PS from the role of the leader of the progressive pole in the country and replace it with a convenient two-party system.”
