On Sunday, May 21, Mount Etna erupted. The airport of the Italian city of Catania has suspended work, the ashes settled on the runways.
How informs “Lenta.ru”, their use in such conditions is unsafe. The airport authorities said:
“Due to the activity of Mount Etna and the large amount of volcanic ash that has fallen on the airport, flights are suspended until conditions allow again.”
It is cloudy at the top of the volcano, so observations are difficult. Presumably the eruption originated from the southeast crater. Deafening bangs have been heard in a wide area since Sunday morning, according to Repubblica.
Etna is 3324 meters high and is the most active volcano in Europe. Catania Airport serves the eastern part of Sicily, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy.
