Supermarket: changing product labels

Prices should be indicated in bold and large print, as well as all information necessary for the convenience of the consumer. This is the regulation that obliges supermarkets to change the labels previously placed on their products.

Changes in product labelingprovided for by the relevant decree of the Ministry of Development, effective as of today, Monday 15 May, for the purpose of immediately and easily informing consumers and preventing them from being misled about the price or quantity of the product they are purchasing. The relevant regulation was announced by the ministry in previous months to give businesses adequate time to adapt. Packaged products must show:

  • Selling price per product package.
  • The price per unit of measurement of the quantity of goods.
  • Product name.

Prices are shown in euros as a number with two decimal places followed by the symbol “€” and include the value added tax (VAT) corresponding to the product in accordance with tax laws. Prices are written in bold and large print. The font must be clearly visible and legible. In this case, the size of the signs of the selling price per unit of measurement must be at least 70% of the size of the signs of the selling price per package. That is, for example, the price per kilogram should not be written in small letters and the consumer should find out in the final invoice how much the product he bought (product packaging) costs.

Symbol sizes should be large enough to provide clear and understandable information to the consumer. On unpacked products (by weight, in bottling) the price is also written in clearly visible and legible letters. Violators are fined 1,000 euros per product code unit. The total amount of the fine imposed during the 1st control check does not exceed:

a) EUR 3,000 for a physical or online store for businesses with a total turnover of up to EUR 1,000,000.

b) EUR 10,000 for a physical or online store for businesses with a total turnover of EUR 1,000,000 to EUR 10,000,000.

c) EUR 20,000 for a physical or online store for businesses with a total turnover of EUR 10,000,000 to EUR 50,000,000.

d) EUR 30,000 for a physical or online store for companies with a total turnover of more than EUR 50,000,000.

Excluded from the above obligations are: retail stores with an area of ​​less than 50 sq.m, if they do not sell bakery products, kiosks, vending machines, if they are not part of a store that sells similar products, cooked or raw food (portions of food or semi-finished products), offered by catering establishments, ice cream with a net weight of up to 200 grams, chocolates with a net weight of up to 100 grams, products with a net weight of up to 50 grams, provided that they are sold in accordance with normal commercial practice by the piece, as well as products with a volume of up to 50 milliliters, provided that they sold in accordance with normal commercial practice by the piece, cosmetics and perfumes and cosmetics and jewelry.
