The Supreme Court of Greece excluded the first party from the general elections for the so-called. technical reasons, not because it is a far-right coalition with nationalist, anti-migrant and homophobic rhetoric, Greek media reported.
The Patriotic Union Party (Πατριωτικής Ένωσης) is organized by independent MP Konstantinos Bogdanos (expelled from New Democracy) and businessman Prodromos Emfietsoglu. By court decision, it was recognized that this party cannot participate in the upcoming elections due to problems with the name and logo. The reasons are that another party called “Patriotic Union – Greek People’s Coalition” complained that Bogdanos and Emfetzoglou had appropriated its name.
Although Emfietsoglu and Bogdanos were informed and asked to provide clarifications, they were unable to convince the authorities that the name was theirs and was not registered to anyone else. On this basis, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the complaining party is the rightful beneficiary of that name.
In addition, the court ruled that the symbol used by the Patriotic Union of Bogdanos-Emfietsoglu, the star of Vergina, is a national symbol, the use of which is prohibited by law.
Thanos Tsimeros, Faylos Kranidiotis and Konstantinos Bogdanos announced last May the creation of the “National Creation” (“Εθνικής Δημιουργίας”), a political coalition of parties “Creation Again” (“Δημιουργία Ξανά”), “New Right” (“Νέα Δεξιά”) and “National Symphony” (“Εθνική Συμφωνία”).
Aphrodite Latinopoulou’s party is also excluded from the 2023 elections following an appeal filed by Konstantinos Bogdanos. In particular, Mr. Bogdanos requested that the former vice-president Afrodita Latinopoulou, and now the head of the “PATRIDA” (Motherland) party, could not use the name of her party. It should be noted that Bogdanos also filed an appeal against the party of T. Tzimeros-F. Cranidiotis.
