The steam locomotive on Mount Pelion went on the route on April 22

The Mount Pelion steam locomotive returned to the rails on Saturday, Hellenic Train said on Friday. Two tourist trains resume service at 10:00 on the Ano-Lehonia-Milies 3800 train and at 15:00 on the Milies-Ano-Lehonia 3801 route on Saturdays and Sundays.

Climbing up the beautiful the slopes of Pelion to Milies starts! On one of the narrowest railway lines in the world (60 cm) there are 4 cars “Mutzuri”, as it was once called Pelion train due to the steam and smoke it left while driving. From Ano Lechonia to Milies, the route passes through the mountains, crossing green slopes and dense vegetation of plane trees and oaks.

The only train stop of just 15 minutes is at Ano Gatzea, to continue the chugging and swaying of the cars on a route totaling 15 kilometers and lasting about 90 minutes. Until the historic village of Milea, the route is filled with views of rich nature and architecture – with old but intricate structures of carved marble and gray limestone that formed buttresses, arched bridges, arches and tunnel gables.

A special example is the five-arched Kalorema stone bridge in the Malaki region. Approaching Milies, the landscape takes on a wild beauty, especially when crossing the large metal bridge Taxiarchis or De Chirico, named after its designer, the father of the great painter. At this point, the train will roll along a curved line, and the bridge on which it stands will be straight.

Milea station is also the end of the route. Here begins a picturesque paved path leading to the center of the village. Traditional guest houses, taverns, the Church of the Archangel built before 1741, a folklore museum and a library, one of the oldest in Greece, await visitors for a tour. The most scenic railway line in Greece will once again be admired on the same day, returning from Milies to Ano Lechonia at 3pm.
