Labels to change in supermarkets from May

Consumers will see new labels on the products of shops and supermarkets from May 15, in connection with the introduction of a new provision “Rules for the circulation and trade of goods and the provision of services.”

According to new data, information provided by the seller to the consumer must be sufficient, clear, understandable and easily accessible, honest, accurate and not misleading as to the price or quantity of goods. Labels (price tags) must be placed next to the respective product and must be written in Greek. Translation into other languages ​​is also allowed, optionally.

Information should include:

  1. price per package (unit) of the product,
  2. the total price for the product, its quantity in the package and the name.

Prices must be quoted in euros as a number with two decimal places followed by the symbol “€” and include value added tax (VAT). Prices must be clearly visible and legible. Who is exempt from the obligation to indicate the price:

  • retail stores with an area of ​​less than 50 square meters, if they do not sell bakery products,
  • kiosks,
  • vending machines (if they are not part of a store selling similar products).

Which products do not require a price indication (do not fall under the above provision):

  • on containers with cooked food (salads, semi-finished products, grilled chickens) offered by catering establishments,
  • portioned ice cream (1 piece with a net weight of up to 200 grams),
  • chocolate candies, packaging with a net weight of up to 100 grams,
  • products with a net weight of up to 50 grams, provided that they are sold in accordance with normal commercial practice by the piece,
  • products with a net volume of up to 50 milliliters, when sold in the course of ordinary trade by the piece,
  • cosmetics and perfumery,
  • jewelry.

Frozen foods are also not covered by this law. The manufacturer is released from the obligation to indicate the price, provided that:

  1. A bar code is clearly visible on the packaging, which can be read using an electronic price counter placed in a place in the store so that any consumer can easily use it before approaching the checkout, and which is located at a distance of not more than ten (10 ) meters from the location of frozen food (refrigerators).
  2. At the point of sale (freezer) there is a large price tag indicating the name of the product and its cost. The size of the symbols of the above sign must be large enough (so that the information provided is clearly visible and readable).

Anyone who violates the provisions is subject to a fine of 1,000 euros per 1 product code. The total amount of the fine imposed (during 1 inspection) does not exceed:

  • 3,000 euros for a physical, physical store or virtual online store (applies to companies with a total turnover of up to one million euros).
  • 10,000 euros for a physical, physical store or virtual online store (applies to companies with a total turnover of one million euros to ten million euros).
  • 20,000 euros for a physical, physical store or virtual online store (applies to companies with a total turnover of ten million euros to fifty million euros).
  • 30,000 for a physical, physical store or virtual online store (applies to companies with a total turnover of more than fifty million euros).
