Inflation in Greece fell to 4.6% in March, but food prices rose another 14.3%

According to a report from the Greek Statistical Office ELSTATinflation slowed down even more, amounting to 4.6% in March this year, but food prices in the same month rose by another 14.3%.

The 4.6% increase in total CPI in March 2023, compared to the corresponding figure in March 2022, is mainly due to changes in the groups of goods and services as follows:

Prices have increased by:

  • 14.3% in the “Food and non-alcoholic drinks” group due mainly to the increase in prices for bread and cereals, meat, fish, milk-cheese and eggs, oils and fats, fruits, vegetables, sugar-chocolate-sweets- ice cream, foodstuffs not included in other groups, coffee-cocoa-tea, mineral water-soft drinks-fruit juices.
  • 3.7% in the “Alcoholic drinks and tobacco products” group, due to an increase, mainly, in prices for alcoholic drinks (not served).
  • 14.4% in the “Clothes and footwear” group, due to the increase in prices for clothing and footwear.
  • 11.0% in the Household Appliances group, due to an increase, mainly, in prices for furniture and interior items, household appliances and repairs, household utensils, non-durable household items, and personal services.
  • 5.6% in the “Health” group, due to the growth, mainly, of prices for pharmaceutical products, medical products, medical dental and paramedical services, inpatient care.
  • 1.9% in the “Transport” group, due to an increase in prices for new cars, used cars, motorcycles, spare parts and accessories for cars, maintenance and repair of motorcycle cars, passenger transportation by taxi, tickets for passenger transportation by air and by sea. This increase was partly offset by lower prices for fuels and lubricants.
  • 2.9% in the “Recreation and culture” group, mainly due to the increase in the price of small leisure items – flowers – pets, cinemas – theaters, stationery and drawing materials, vouchers.
  • 2.2% in the “Education” group due to higher fees for primary and secondary education.
  • 7.5% in the group Hotels-Cafes-Restaurants, due to rising prices for restaurants-pastry-cafes-buffets, hotels-motels-hotels.
  • 6.2% in the “Other goods and services” group, due to higher prices for hairdressers and personal care salons, other devices and personal hygiene items, private health insurance.

Prices have dropped to:

  • 10.4% in the “Housing” group, mainly due to lower prices for electricity, fuel oil. Part of this decline was offset by rising prices for rental housing, home repairs and maintenance, utilities, natural gas, LPG, and solid fuels.
  • 1.9% in the Communications group, mainly due to lower prices for telephone services.
