The quality of Greek cheese products was assessed by a European test

Over the past few days, inspections have been carried out at dozens of cheese companies across Thessaly to ensure that international health standards mandated by the European Union are met.

They showed that Thessaly continues a long tradition of strict observance of the prescribed rules of hygiene and sanitation. This fact was confirmed by on-site inspections carried out as part of the “Health and Food Inspections and Analyzes 2023 Work Program” by a group of public service representatives who monitored the entire production process of the product, from breeding animals that produce milk, to the production of cheese and its packaging.

The inspection in Thessaly was preceded by a similar one in Epirus. The data obtained showed that the legislation was observed in relation to milk and dairy products.

Over time, internal food control authorities have made progress based on the recommendations of European Union officials (having carried out a previous audit 10 years earlier, in 2013, which dealt exclusively with hygiene control in the production of cheese and dairy products).

The checks were carried out in the cheese factories of Larissa and Magnesia, and the interest was focused not only on the hygiene rules, but also on the efficiency of the competent veterinary services of the Thessaly region, as well as on the cooperation of the services involved in the checks, such as the competent ministry, EFET.

As a result of the monitoring and subsequent online evaluation, a verdict was reached: in addition to the improvements in the hygiene and efficiency of the veterinary services of the Thessaly region, there is a need – on the part of the state – for better coordination of the central administration services (YPAAT, EFET) with the regional ones, as well as a fuller use technologies.
