When do I need to renew my driver’s license and how much will it cost?

Every motorist should be aware that the driver’s license he has is not valid indefinitely and therefore he must renew it at certain intervals.

For most people, a driver’s license is synonymous with “coming of age” as it gives them much-desired independence while traveling. And many believe that after obtaining a driver’s license, it is valid indefinitely. However, this is an erroneous opinion.

According to the current legislation, amateur driver’s licenses of a new type (plastic cards) of categories (AM, A1, A2, A, B, B1 and BE) are subject to renewal every 15 years from the date of issue, and the old diplomas (triple pink booklet) must be replaced by January 19, 2033. As for professional diplomas (categories C, CE, C1, C1E, D, DE, D1 and D1E), they need to be updated every five years.

There is, of course, a category of drivers who, due to their age, have to renew their rights even more often. These are persons who have reached the age of 65, with the obligatory renewal of their diplomas every three years – for both amateur and professional driving licenses.

It is noted that examination by an ophthalmologist and therapist is required for reissuing a diploma in connection with reaching the age of 65 and after 15 years. After reaching 80 years of age driver’s license must be renewed every two yearswhile, in addition to an examination by a general practitioner and an ophthalmologist, a medical examination by a neurologist or psychiatrist is also required.

It is worth noting that the replacement of a driver’s license is a particularly expensive procedure, the cost of which exceeds 100 euros. The total amount includes:

  • an electronic receipt in the amount of 18 euros
  • 60 euros for the “extension” service (για την ανανέωση),
  • 30 euros for printing a document (για την εκτύπωση).

Thus, the total “bill” is 108 euros, and doctors’ fees are added to it, that is, payment for an appointment with a general practitioner and an ophthalmologist, while their minimum fee is 20 euros (10 euros each). Thus, the cost is 128 euros and increases even more after reaching the age of 80, since examination of other medical specialists is also required.
