Greece presents pre-Christian custom of blessing to UNESCO

The Ministry of Culture has asked UNESCO to include the traditional Greek custom of blessing the bounty of the land on its list of intangible cultural heritage.

Polysporia is an ancient custom practiced in many parts of the country until the very end of the 19th century, the last traces of which can be found in the city of Elefsina in western Attica – the cultural capital EU for 2023 – and, in particular, in the church of Panagia Mesosporitissa.

The custom, thought to show how early Christians continued to worship the ancient gods by associating the Virgin Mary with Demeter, goddess of the harvest and agriculture, was revived in Elefsina in 2014 by the local cultural association Adrachti and has since gained popularity.

Timed to coincide with the middle of the sowing season, the custom of blessing includes moving prayers and the distribution of a dish of boiled grains, beans and seeds.
