How to Value China’s Silence

After a visit to Moscow, Chinese leader Xi Jinping refuses to talk not only with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but also with US President Joe Biden.

According to Reuters, relations between Beijing and Washington are deteriorating rapidly. US officials are wondering how to reset relations with China. The obvious first step, the newspaper writes, would be a telephone conversation between Biden and Xi. However, the efforts of American diplomats, according to sources, remain inconclusive – the Chinese have not shown much interest in such a call.

In doubt and postponed earlier, due to the incident with balloons, Anthony Blinken’s visit to China. Now US representatives are in Beijing and are trying to “lay the foundation” for this visit.

The tension between the two states is not subsiding. Including because of the upcoming visit to the US by Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and the trip of the American president to the G20 summit in Japan, Beijing regards it as “anti-Chinese.”

Against this background, Reuters notes the strengthening of Russian-Chinese relations and quotes the phrase of Mao Zedong: “The east wind will defeat the west wind.”

Although Joe Biden believes, according to CNN, that the rapprochement between Russia and China is “grossly exaggerated”, and if anyone is forming successful alliances in the modern world, it is the United States, he said in Ottawa:

“I don’t take lightly what China and Russia are doing and it could escalate substantially. But let’s put things in perspective.”
