Author "black square" became Ukrainian

The Museum of Amsterdam began to present the artist Kazimir Malevich as a Ukrainian – earlier in the descriptions he was a Russian artist.

The change of Malevich’s nationality was explained by the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam by the fact that Malevich was born in Kyiv. The representative of the museum stated that this fact was the main reason for the adoption such a decision:

“Now we report that Malevich was born in Ukraine to parents of Polish origin.”

Changes have been made both to the information boards and to the museum website.

Kazimir Severinovich Malevich was born (11) February 23, 1878 (according to some sources in 1879) near Kyiv. His parents were of Polish origin. He began to learn to draw on his own after he received a set of paints from his mother as a gift at the age of 15. At the age of 17, he studied for some time at the Kyiv Art School. In 1896 the Malevich family settled in Kursk. There, Kazimir worked as a minor official, but left the service for the sake of a career as an artist. His first works were written in the style of impressionism. In 1904, Malevich decided to drastically change his life and moved to Moscow for this.

In 1919, the artist moved to Vitebsk, and in 1927 to Kyiv, where he taught at the Kiev Art Institute, published articles on artistic topics. But the beginning of repressions in Ukraine against some representatives of the intelligentsia forced Malevich to return to Leningrad, where he continued to engage in creativity. There he died on May 15, 1935.
