Illumination of the Piraeus Tower inspires joy, hope and optimism

The Piraeus skyscraper shone for the second year in a row, adorned with festive illuminations a few days before Christmas. According to the municipal authorities, this was done in order to instill joy, hope and optimism in the hearts of the inhabitants and guests of Piraeus.

At a time when the price of electricity is a “sensitive issue”, the Piraeus Tower is illuminated again. This year, with absolute respect for the difficult situation that we are facing around the world, special attention is paid to a significant reduction in electricity consumption. Energy saving, environmental friendliness and new technologies – this is a holistic triptych of lighting the country’s first “green” skyscraper.

Piraeus Tower, without exaggeration, will become the pearl of the port, and 1300 strobe lights will illuminate the building from December 13 to January 8.

Mayor of Piraeus Yiannis Moralis and Managing Director of Piraeus Tower and DIMAND Dimitris Andriopoulos held a solemn ceremony (it should be noted, very modestly), thus marking a significant event. The illumination of the building took place on the evening of Tuesday 13 December. The Christmas decoration of the tower consists exclusively of diffused lighting fixtures (LED technology), which results in reduced energy consumption. This year, consumption will be up to 38.20 kW. In addition, it was decided to limit the period of time during which the work will remain illuminated.

As Athens News previously wrote, the project for the reconstruction of the Piraeus Tower is progressing by leaps and bounds and is expected to be completed in 2023. The first stage of reconstruction is carried out by TERNA SA, a 100% subsidiary of GEK TERNA Group. The project budget is about 19 million euros.

Famous but abandoned for decades Piraeus tower is the second tallest building in Greece after the Athens skyscraper. It has a height of 84 meters and consists of 22 floors. Built in the port 45 years ago, the building was never used for a variety of reasons.

The terms of the international tender, according to the approved ministerial decision (ΣτΕ), provide for its concession for 99 years, as well as management and operation by a contractor with an annual financial reward allocated to the municipality in the amount of 1,010,000 euros. The project implementation period is 33 months. It is given for major repairs and improvement of the interior and adjacent territory, renovation of facades with a protective screen, vertical green areas, as well as a modern lighting system to make it a landmark of the city.

The use of the tower provides for housing (by leasing) shops, offices, restaurants and a cultural center to promote the maritime tourism and shipping product. The investment is being carried out by Dimand together with Prodea Investments and the EBRD. The amount of investments reaches 40 million euros and is financed by Alfa-Bank. The new tower is expected to start operating in the first half of 2023.
