AIDS and HIV

The abbreviation AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and is an incurable infectious disease caused by the HIV virus. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, which attacks the immune system responsible for protecting the body from infections, tumors and other diseases. The names HIV and AIDS can be confused because both terms describe the same disease. AIDS is a progressive HIV infection. In a person with AIDS, the immune system is so weakened by HIV that they usually get one or more infections, such as pneumonia (PP) or Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS), epigastric syndrome (weight loss), memory impairment, or cancer.

EODY Report for the first ten months of 2022 year shows decrease in the number of new infections compared to previous yearswhich, according to Mario Lasan, President of the Hellenic Association for the Study and Treatment of AIDS (EEMAA), was achieved not only thanks to modern improved diagnostic methods, but also the effectiveness of treatment.

In particular, 430 new patients were recorded, including 343 men and 87 women. 202 diagnoses were associated with ASD, 94 with heterosexual contact, 52 with intravenous drug use and 5 with vertical transmission (from mother to pregnant child) from foreigners infected in their countries of origin.

Greece decided to create national registry of patients with HIV.
