A 10-year-old girl who lost her sight at the age of 2.5 received one of the corneas of 21-year-old Emma, who died in an accident in Thessaloniki when the driver left the scene, leaving the girl to bleed to death on the road today.
After the decision of the student’s family, untimely and unfairly,who passed away because of an Albanian scorcherto donate her organs, and after a heart, liver and kidney transplant, today one of the corneas of the eye was transplanted to the baby who will gain sight.
The director of the 2nd University Ophthalmological Clinic and Center for Cornea Transplantation at Papageorgiou Hospital announced at 12:00 that the transplantation was successful. “Some time ago, a corneal transplant was completed, donated by the parents of a girl from Crete who died last week. Liptis is a girl from the south of Greece who was injured at the age of 2.5 and has since had three surgeries without success. Doctors fought to ensure that the child could see the colors of this world and live a full life. We hope that today’s operation will be the last, and the cornea will take root. The transplant went very well. The girl will be able to see the world through Emma’s eyes.”
“The second cornea of the eye will be used by the AHEPA center. We have three more transplants scheduled for Thursday, all of the corneas came from new donors,” Mr. Ziakas said, expressing immense gratitude to the mourning family of the deceased for choosing to donate their daughter’s organs. Their example is a message to all the people of the world about how to act.
