China, India and South Africa – the three main BRICS countries – abstained from a UN vote condemning the incorporation of four regions of Ukraine into Russia, thus sending a signal to the West.
A vote in the UN General Assembly condemned the annexation of the regions, but key countries and nuclear powers such as China and India abstained, effectively neutralizing the decision in favor of Russia.
The UN General Assembly “condemned” the recent “illegal annexations” of four Ukrainian regions by Russia, adopting a resolution last night with 143 votes in favor, 5 against and 35 abstentions. In addition to Russia, Belarus, Syria, North Korea, and Nicaragua voted against the text.
There were two more “yes” votes than the 141 votes that approved the text condemning the Russian operation six months ago. Brazil, Saudi Arabia and Turkey voted yes. For its part, the German Foreign Office is celebrating by talking about the countries that support it.
