Georgiadis: “Fuel measures are possible, but food shortages are not to be feared”

Development Minister Adonis Georgiadis says it is highly likely that fuel measures will be “targeted, not horizontal” in the summer.

“There is a big problem with fuel on the islands, firstly, for transport, which has risen in price, and secondly, there are islands where there is no “healthy competition” and having only 1-2 gas stations. We are discussing scenarios for the islands, the announcement will be made by the competent minister. The fuel issue is of great concern to the government,” he said.

“There is a big fuel problem associated with a twofold increase. On the one hand, there is an increase in oil prices, and on the other, a fall in the euro. In 2011, it was $147 per barrel, and the euro cost $1.50,” the minister explained.

For extending the gasoline subsidyas was done for other oil products, as Minister of Finance Christos Staikouras announced, fiscal space will be built, but first it is necessary to start implementing measures on electricity.

When asked about this, he said that checks have already begun to ensure that refineries (refineries) comply with the law, that is, they operate at a rate of return on September 1, 2021 (which applies to the entire supply chain).

The deadline was 23 May for the submission of data. “In general, the first fines are already being observed in the fuel market. Several elements of price ceiling violations have been found,” said Adonis Georgiadis, speaking on SKAI today.

food market

“The state agreement on the food market on pricing is prohibited by the law on competition and is illegal,” the minister explained. “Of course, there are concerns around the world about food shortages… YPANE and YPAAT have created an electronic platform for declaring food stocks, which gives us reassurance. There is no fear that at the moment there will be no food, ”he assured.
