USA: vaccination of children from 5 years of age starts

From next week in the United States will begin to vaccinate children aged 5-11 years. The process of sending 15 million doses of vaccine to Pfizer is underway, Jeff Zientes, White House Coronavirus Coordinator, told Reuters yesterday during an online press conference.

The vaccine administration schedule is similar to that used for adults – 2 doses with an interval of 21 days. Each child dose contains 10 mcg of the vaccine, which is one third of the adult dose. The immune response in children is the same as in young people 16-25 years old who receive 30 μg of the vaccine.

Last Friday, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Pfizer vaccine for children ages 5-11. This decision made it the first Covid-19 vaccine approved for use in young children in the United States.

The use of Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine in children aged 5 to 11 has begun to be evaluated by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Manufacturing companies reported that the vaccine elicits a strong immune response in children aged 5 to 11 years in clinical trials involving 2,268 people.
