The head of the American Archdiocese of Phanar, Archbishop Elpidophoros (Lambriniadis), said that he regretted the pain that he unwittingly inflicted on the Cypriot brothers by his participation in the opening of the Turkish Center in New York. According to him, he understands very well the pain, feelings and reactions of his Cypriot brothers, but his presence at the event had the same goal as always, namely “honest and courageous dialogue in the name of peace and protection of religious freedom.”

“As a Greek from Istanbul, my family and I have experienced the dire consequences of the expulsion from the homes of our ancestors, as well as many of my compatriots, as well as the Imbrians and Tenedians, due to the next escalation of the Cyprus problem in the 70s. I grew up with this pain, therefore I understand the pain of our Cypriot brothers, as well as their feelings and reactions, and I consider them an expression of the pain of people who have lost everything: property, homeland, dreams, family, relatives.

Therefore, I want to declare to everyone that my presence at the event on Monday could never be a recognition of disaster, refugee, occupation. My presence has always had the same constant orientation: honest and courageous dialogue in the name of peace and the defense of religious freedom. We are all united in upholding our national interests, each in his own way and in his own role. But they are united, committed to one goal.

“I sincerely regret the pain I unwittingly inflicted on my Cypriot and Greek-American brothers, especially my beloved flock. I pray that a just and sustainable solution will be found in Cyprus, as the Cypriot people expect, on the basis of international law and the protection of human rights, in accordance with UN resolutions, and I am working in this direction, ”the Phanar hierarch wrote and stressed that the American the archdiocese is always “beside Hellenism everywhere, defending its aspirations.”
