Severe forest fire on the outskirts of Athens

A violent wildfire is raging in the elite Athenian district of Varimpompi in northwest Attica: the inhabitants of the houses are being evacuated; residents were urged to close doors and windows.

Authorities temporarily closed part of the Athens-Lamia national highway in northeastern Attica after a massive fire broke out in the Upper Varimmpi area on Tuesday afternoon.

About two hours earlier, residents of Varibobi and Kryoneri Attica were called to close doors, windows and chimneys after a thick black cloud emerged from a fire in a nearby forest at the foot of Mount Parnitha.

Civil protection message by emergency number <112>; also advised local residents to be ready to evacuate if necessary.

A large force of firefighters, consisting of about 150 firefighters, more than 50 special vehicles, and several groups of volunteers, were allocated to liquidate the fire. As well as helicopters and fire-fighting aircraft.

The Varibobi area and the nearby Krio Nera and Kifissia are areas of luxury housing and luxury villas.
