In tuesday afternoon there were massive disruptions to the World Wide Web, shutting down a number of major international news and government websites, as well as social media. As it turned out, “Petrov, Bashirov, as well as Russian hackers ™” has nothing to do with it.
The culprit was the American cloud computing company Fastly, a San Francisco-based company that partners with these websites. The company said in a statement that it is studying “the possible impact on the performance of CDN services,” and later announced that the problem had been identified and was being addressed.
Most Fastly’s coverage areas have “lost productivity,” Reuters reported. It is a cloud-based web content provider, according to a company spokesman in an interview with the Financial Times.
At the same time, countless popular social media platforms – and beyond – such as Reddit, Spotify, Twitch, Stack Overflow, GitHub, Hulu, HBO Max, Quora, PayPal, and Vimeo have had problems.
More than 21,000 Reddit users reported issues with the social media platform in the first minutes of the outage, according to Reuters.
Most of the websites became available again (after 2:00 pm) after new login attempts. …
