Blood was shed in a Belarusian court

Opposition activist Stepan Latypov attempted suicide during a court hearing, according to the human rights group Viasna.

While in the courtroom during the consideration of the case, a resident of Minsk Stepan Latypov tried to cut his throat. Before that, he turned to his father, who is here:

Father! After the meeting, the GUBOP came to me. They promised that if I do not admit my guilt, I will have a press hut * and criminal cases against my family and neighbors. I already had a press hut, 51 days, so get ready.

* A press hut in jargon is a room with unbearable conditions where confessions are sought.

The shocking incident sparked panic in the courtroom, the Athens News Agency said. The doctors summoned to the court reported that Latypov, who had tried to commit suicide, would be put into a state of artificial coma. The victim’s father, who is in the courtroom, said that his son had been detained since April 11, placing him with people suffering from mental illness.

Belarusian opposition leader Stepan Latypov is being tried for protest symbols and police resistance.
