Greek beaches in the second place in the world for the number of “blue flags”

The ATOR Association of Tour Operators informs about the cleanliness of the Greek beaches, hospitably waiting for tourists. Greece has become the second in the world, giving way to the leader of Spain, in terms of the number of “blue flags”.

As you know, it is not so easy to obtain the prestigious ecological mark, which has been awarded to the best beaches since 1987. For the assessment, the compliance of the water and the coastal zone with thirty-three criteria is checked. Among them are the impeccable purity of the water, high standards of its quality, and environmental measures. In this case, not only the beach is assessed, but also piers, bays, bays and ships. To receive the prestigious award, a beach must demonstrate:

clean water, the quality of which is tested weekly; Free access; the presence of a rescue service and the ability to provide emergency assistance on the beach; daily cleaning of the coastal area; showers with clean fresh water; lack of pets; lack of motor transport.

This year, according to the EEPF (Greek Society for the Conservation of Nature), 545 beaches in Greece have received the blue flag, 48 more than last year. 6 tourist ships and 16 marinas also received a high status.

In terms of the number of “blue flags” Greece took the honorable second place among 49 countries, leaving behind only Spain and leaving behind Turkey. Every tenth clean beach in the world is offered by Greece. This year, 4,040 beaches worldwide, as well as 78 tourist boats and 707 marinas, received the badge.

If we look at the beaches in Greece, then Crete can boast of the cleanest sea, which has 120 “blue flags”. Chalkidiki (96 awards) is not far behind, followed by: Rhodes (49), Attica (15), Thessaloniki (13), Kos (12), Corfu (10).
