The holiday of electromobility was first celebrated in Greece

The largest European festival of electric vehicles took place in Thessaloniki on Aristotle Square on 8 and 9 May 2021, under the auspices of the Municipality of Thessaloniki in cooperation with GRC TECH-BLAUPUNKT.

The purpose of the event was to familiarize the public with electric bicycles and scooters, as well as interpretation of traffic rules (set of rules of the road), which must be followed by the owners of this type of vehicle.

An exclusive video (video tutorial) was provided for the event by the Institute for Road Safety. All information was shown on screens with subtitles to help citizens familiarize themselves with and study traffic rules.

The social event was accompanied by interactive games with small and slightly older visitors who came to the party with their parents. Children were asked to depict a bicycle with the necessary protective equipment for safe riding, and many gifts were presented.

Deputy Mayor for Environment Sokratis Dimitriadis and Deputy Mayor for Finance Michalis Kupkas also attended the event and even tested electric bicycles and scooters. 500 gifts from Blaupunkt were handed out to those present.

The law provides that a driver’s license is not required to drive individual electrically powered vehicles with a maximum design speed of up to 25 km / h, but certain restrictions, rules of use and safety are introduced.

New traffic rules for individual electric vehicles

Traffic regulations are established for small, individual vehicles with an electric drive (electric scooters, rollers, skateboards, self-balancing vehicles, bicycles, etc.).

Individual vehicles powered by an electric motor are grouped into a vehicle category that we refer to in the draft law as I.T.E.P. (ελ.- Ε.Π.Η.Ο.), that is, by light personal electric transport. The order of their distribution is carried out on the basis of an assessment and comparative study of other countries, based on the development of their speed:

Vehicles that develop a low speed of up to 6 km / h, i.e. close to the speed of pedestrians, move along sidewalks and pedestrian areas with pedestrians. I.T.E.P., which develop a speed of 6 to 25 km / h, are classified as bicycles and run where permitted. For safety reasons, the movement of these vehicles (I.T.E.P.) is prohibited on roads at high speeds (over 50 km / h).

The issues of technical performance and safe use of vehicles are regulated with an emphasis on mandatory equipment, which I.T.E.P. must be carried on board in accordance with the bicycles (brakes, parking lights, audible warning).

Distributors of goods and items (for example, “courier” and “delivery”) who use a bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, tricycle, etc. to do their job, are required to wear reflective clothing (vest, jacket, etc.) when doing their work at night, making them visible from all directions. Likewise, all I.T.E.P. must wear reflective clothing or other reflective equipment (such as a sticker on clothing or on a backpack) at night.

Describes the responsibilities of the vehicle user. Roughly cyclists and drivers I.T.E.P. It is recommended to wear an approved safety helmet with a buttoned on. Also, riders of bicycles under the age of 12 and moving on the road network intended for the movement of vehicles must be accompanied by persons who have reached the age of 16.
