Haris Theocharis: “Tourism may open until May 14”

Tourism Minister Haris Theocharis is positive about the safe opening of the Greek tourism industry.

Addressing the world tourism community, he stressed: “We will accept and take care of every tourist who comes to us, as if he were a member of our family. Greece has proven to be a pioneer in the implementation of the health protocol. ”

Mr. Theocharis commented on the introduction and application of the digital Certificate of Vaccination (Health Passport), which, he said, “will make a significant contribution to increasing the flow of tourists to the country.”

The minister stressed that the arrival of foreign guests to Greece can begin until May 14. “If all goes well, Greece will be able to receive tourists even earlier,” he said, adding that the ministry is discussing a gradual resumption of flights with the countries of the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Serbia and the United Arab Emirates.

Among other things, Mr. Theocharis said that this year will be allowed to sail on yachts (departures / arrivals), as well as cruises without intermediate stops in ports, the so-called “blue cruises”. “In general, international interest in the discovery of Greek tourism is very high. The resumption of travel is awaited with great impatience, ”he said.

Tourism renewal plan in 5 steps
As the Minister of Tourism explained, after May 14, Greece will implement a general plan for the resumption of tourism: “This concerns, first of all, determining the conditions under which a foreign citizen can come to our country.”

First, he must either be vaccinated, recovered, or test negative for coronavirus. Secondly, when a tourist arrives, he will be subjected to selective targeted screening at the airport using the innovative EVA system. Third, rapid tests will be widely used. Fourth, there will be isolators for those who test positive. Fifthly, strict compliance with the health protocol, which will be in effect this year at the global level (for travelers).

Addressing businessmen in the tourism industry, especially the hospitality sector, who, in turn, are awaiting recommendations from the authorities regarding the health protocol, Mr. Theocharis said that the circular will be updated in the coming days. In addition, tourism workers will be offered a priority vaccination.
