Thessaloniki: Two men arrested for stealing petrol from parked cars

Two men who systematically stole fuel from parked cars in a district of Thessaloniki have been taken into custody.

The Thessaloniki court found the defendants guilty of theft and sentenced them to eight months in prison. The court, taking into account their criminal record, decided to serve part of the sentence, four months out of eight.

According to one of the victims, two men arrived at dawn on Tuesday morning in the area where he lives and, while their unknown accomplice watched them, broke into his car and began draining the gas.

On the second day, they returned to the same area to repeat their act, but were unaware that the victim was watching them from the balcony. According to a witness, at some point, the second victim came down from her house and began screaming at the accused when she realized they were stealing gasoline from the family's car and the criminals ran away.

The first witness, having called the police, followed the two men and found them pouring the stolen petrol into the getaway car they were driving – a BMW. However, as soon as they started the engine to drive away, the car began emitting black smoke, as he described, because it was running on… diesel fuel, not the petrol the accused had put in the tank.

Wanting to detain them until the police arrived and arrest them, the witness approached the defendants and asked if they needed help with the car, to which they responded in the affirmative. A few minutes later, the police arrived and handcuffed them.

In their statement, the accused claimed that this was the first time they had stolen fuel from cars and that they did it because they had run out of petrol and wanted to drive their car.

Of course, they believed them…
