Plan to link Greek and Cyprus power grids stalled over Turkey's reaction

Project to create a national electrical network between Greece and Cyprus via the Great Sea Interconnector remains up in the air despite apparent progress made by ADMIE and the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority, in collaboration with French contractor Nexans, in taking a final decision on the regulatory framework.

Following the events in Kassos, Greece can under no circumstances take action in Turkey's UN-recognized EEZ without the permission of the Turks.

For the Mitsotakis government, this is of course not a problem, as G. Gerapetritis emphasized the day after the retreat of the Navy ships together with the research vessel from Kasos – there is no crisis and no problem with the Turks in Kasos, while Turkish frigates have been “cruising” in Greek waters. The Kasos incident and Greece's weak response show that we have already started silently, gradually but steadily cede the Greek EEZ.

In 2020, when the problem with the Turkish research vessel arose Oruc Reisour response at the diplomatic and military level through our navy was clearly more substantial and reminiscent of a state that knows how to defend its sovereign rights. Operationally, the Greek navy, which was deployed throughout the Southern Mediterranean from July 15 to September 15, 2020, achieved great success and the Turks realized that they are not in the mood for “games”.

In the current circumstances, the events of 2020 may become just a distant memory, especially after the events in Libya. It should be recalled that a memorandum was submitted to the Turkish National Assembly for approval, granting Turkish forces operational freedom and legal protection during their stay in Libya, which provides broad powers. Turkish forces in Libya and opens a new chapter in the fight against the threat facing Greece's “soft underbelly”.

The new agreement codifies the procedures for Turkey's integration into the Libyan state apparatus and the procedures that lead to it. And all this under the seal of the UN, which has recognized Tripoli as the official government of Libya. So how exactly the Great Sea Interconnector will be completed without Turkey as the “host” remains unknown.
