The European Union imports more gas from Russia than from the US

For the first time in two years The European Union imported more gas from Russia in a quarter than from the US. This is a paradox, especially considering that EU entered sanctions against Russiaand this has affected the energy market.

This is evidenced by data from the Brussels-based consulting company Bruegel, writes the Czech publication Bluewin. Despite the sanctions, according to statistics, in the second quarter (from April to June) The EU purchased 12.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia and 12.3 billion from the United States.. Moreover, compared to the first quarter of 2024, Supplies from Russia decreased slightly, while those from the US decreased more sharply.

Earlier, Reuters reported that in July, Europe purchased a record volume of pipeline gas from Russia this year. The growth is explained by the completion of repairs to the Turkstream pipelinegoing from Russia to Turkey, and seasonal demand for energy resources in anticipation of winter.

Gas transit through Ukraine also increased to 91.5 million cubic meters, which is 5.66% more than last year and 11.86% more than in June. As we have already reported, France increased imports of Russian LNG by 50%.

The Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air writes that The largest importers of Russian fossil fuels in the EU were Hungary, France, Slovakia, Spain and the Czech Republic.
