Venezuela extradited Colombians who fought on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to Russia. There they face up to 15 years in prison.
The newspaper El Tiempo reports on this. On August 30, the Russian FSB reported the arrest of two Colombian citizens for participating in military operations on the Ukrainian side as mercenaries.According to the publication, both soldiers were detained in Caracas and extradited to Russia.
The sister of one of the mercenaries said the men were wearing Ukrainian army uniforms, which attracted the attention of Venezuelan police. Alexander Arte and Jose Aron Medina stopped in Caracas on their way home to Colombia.
There have been no official statements from the authorities of Russia, Colombia and Venezuela yet. If the information is confirmed, the detention in Caracas and extradition of the Colombians will be the first known case of the expulsion to Russia of foreign citizens who took part in the Ukrainian conflict.
According to the Russian FSB, a criminal case has been opened against the Colombians for mercenarism, writes BB.LV. The maximum penalty under this article is 15 years in prison.
