Incredible scam: Victim paid €45,000 for 100 counterfeit coins

An incredibly brazen fraud took place on Tuesday morning, August 27, near the judicial complex of Patras.

The buyer was looking for a black market seller of coins (gold lira), and a friend recommended a 40-year-old man from Western Achaea, whom he knew only “in passing”. However, the victim trusted his friend and made a purchase without any doubts or verification of the seller's integrity.

The man gave the scammer a bag with 45,000 euros and received from him a bag with (supposedly…) coins, which I didn't check it on siteWhen he did this later, he discovered that the bag contained… “flouries” (lucky pie coins) and metal washers (for weight) at the bottom.

Naturally, the 50-year-old resident of Patras was in shock and, as soon as he came to his senses, notified the police, who took appropriate action and identified the criminal. A search was launched for a 40-year-old man from Western Achaea at his home and in places he often visits. However, he “had disappeared without a trace.” Apparently, he disappearedso as not to be exposed.

The police have established that the wanted man has previously used fraudulent methods to extort money from unsuspecting people. The case is expected to be handed over to the prosecutor today, 29.08.2024.

«We have investigated many frauds, but this case is unprecedented.“,” said a senior officer at the local police station, adding: “The thief was so brazen that he made the deal on a busy street in the center of Patras. He figured that in front of people his victim would not check the contents of the bag. As it happened. Sometimes we are surprised by the naivety of our fellow citizens.
When making deals, check everything carefully, from beginning to end. Don't be trusting, because Fraud cases have increased to an alarming degree“.
