Five people, including a Russian couple, have died in a landslide in Phuket. The identities of the others are being established.
How tells BB.LV, the landslide was caused by rains on the island, which is very popular among tourists visiting Thailand. The police reported the incident and the presence of Russian citizens among the dead on Friday, August 23.
The landslide occurred in an area of Phuket with hotels and apartment buildings. It was the result of heavy monsoon rains last week on the southern coast and in northern parts of the country. Five people have been killed and 32 injured in flooding over the past month, according to the Health Ministry.
The search and rescue operation in Phuket involves soldiers, police and volunteers, but it could be hampered by heavy rain, which is again predicted by weather forecasters. In 2011, flooding in Thailand killed more than 500 people and damaged millions of homes.
