The President of the Greek Livestock Breeders Association, Takis Peveretos, stresses that in order to eradicate the plague (PPR) of sheep and goats, it is necessary to carry out random checks throughout the country.
Mr Peveret explains that there is no picture of the spread of the virus and expresses his concern that three regions of the country are already under quarantine. He says that since the incubation period of the virus is 22 days, there is no picture of how many people were transporting live animals without following protocols and calls on the judiciary to intervene immediately.
The SEK chairman notes that large-scale checks are needed. He notes that the outbreak is believed to have originated in Romania, possibly as a result of imports from the Middle East. However, this the event caused panic among farmers, since every time a case of the disease is detected, it means that the herd must be destroyed.
And he noted that the Ministry of Rural Development should review the amount of compensation it provides to livestock breeders. Because “that's funny”: give 100-150 euros per animal, when a sheep costs a farmer 300-350 euros.
