Heat-related deaths to quadruple

The European community is currently in a state of alarm due to the onset of dangerous heat waves.

Speaking at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Department of Humanitarian Affairs (HAS) for 2024, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Society (IFRC), Nena Stoiljkovic, said that “climate change affects everyone, but not equally“.

As temperature records are broken one after another amid unprecedented global heat waves, access to air conditioning should be an inalienable human right, regardless of his financial situation (for example, free access to water and heat, non-material benefits), she said. – The conservative forecast of scientists is that by By mid-century, the annual number of heat-related deaths will quadruple, with heat exposure expected to increase potential lost work time worldwide by 50%. We must ask ourselves: are we really prepared for this scenario? And when temperatures rise, who will be left behind? Effective mitigation and adaptation rely on local action and local solutions, because climate impacts vary greatly across relatively small geographic areas, so actions need to be “rooted” and linked to specific communities“.

The IFRC Deputy Secretary-General for Global Affairs, Humanitarian Diplomacy and Digitalization presented an analysis of the challenges posed by the climate crisis at the HAS High-Level Panel on the Impact of Climate Change on Humanitarian Emergencies.
