The price of lamb has skyrocketed. In local butcher shops it reaches 13-14 euros per kilogram, and according to the ALPHA TV channel, at Easter the price of lamb is expected to reach 15-16 euros per kilogram.
In addition, over the past four months, beef has risen in price by at least 0.50 cents, resulting in its price today at 13.50 per kilogram. Consumers say prices are lower at the central Athens Varvakeio market, and one butcher said beef sells for between €6.99 and €9.99 a kilo at the market, but buyers have concerns about the quality of the meat.
At the same time, fish… is not available even at the farmers’ market: sardines (σαρδέλες) sell for 6 euros per kilo. In six months, sea bream (τσιπούρα) has risen in price from 8 to 10 euros, sultana (κουτσομούρα) – from 17 to 23 euros, and fresh squid – from 21 to 23 euros per kilo.
