The crash of a two-seater ultralight aircraft in the Maleme offshore area of Chania turned into a tragedy. According to media reports, the glider was found at a depth of just a few meters, and rescuers who arrived at the scene found the two pilots in the cockpit and pulled them out unconscious.
A small ultralight aircraft from the West Attica Flying Club took off from Kopida to Maleme Airport, which is used by the Chania Flying Club. It was reportedly already dark when they arrived in the area, and in order to land, the pilot made a U-turn over Kolymbari, approaching the runway from the sea, but suddenly crashed a short distance from the shore. See what the diver who spotted them has to say.
Rescuers arrived at the scene, as reported by the mayor of the city of Platanias Yiannis Malandrakis, a coast guard boat, a navy helicopter, two ships and a fishing boat.
Unfortunately, rescuers who approached the small aircraft were unable to help the pilots, but only recovered two bodies, which were taken to the port of Kolymbari, and from there to the Chania hospital.
