At the Valdai Forum on October 5, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that no one shot down Prigozhin’s plane, the owner of the PMC Wagner and Utkin, who was also there, blew themselves up with hand grenades.
The head of the Russian Federation said: “The Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, Bastrykin, reported to me that fragments of grenades were found in the bodies of those killed in the plane crash; there was no external influence on the plane.” Putin also added that Prigozhin and Wagner’s management probably used drugs:
“Unfortunately, no examination was carried out for the presence of alcohol or drugs in the blood of the victims, although we know that after the well-known events in the company (during searches of Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Wagner structures – Ed.) in St. Petersburg, the FSB discovered not only 10 billion in cash, but also five kilos of cocaine. In my opinion, such an examination should have been carried out, but it was not carried out.”
The head of state also assessed the role of the Wagnerites in the war with Ukraine, noting that they “fought mediocrely,” and there is no point in creating such structures.
