The Greek Ministry of Finance has submitted for consideration the issue of compensation for the Athens International Airport, operated by the German company German Hochtief, as well as 14 regional airports operated by the German Fraport, for losses in 2020 due to the pandemic.
A bill to allocate 177.9 million euros to 14 regional airports operated by the German company Fraport was approved at the level of a parliamentary committee on Tuesday. The bill ratifies the December 2015 agreement between the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) and Fraport to help compensate for losses caused by the state.
The ruling New Democracy supported the bill, the main opposition Syriza and the Movement for Change (KINAL) reserved the decision for plenary discussion, the Communist Party KKE, Greek Solution and MeRA25 rejected it.
It is reported that Athens International Airport will receive compensation in the amount of 130 million euros.
Speaking to the party representatives, Minister of Finance Christos Staikuras said that “passenger traffic at airports decreased globally, and in Greece, in particular, it fell by 70.5% in 2020 compared to the same period in 2019” and by 72.1% in terms of the economic model forecast.
According to him, similar initiatives have been taken by the governments of a number of European and other countries.
