$8.2 billion ‘smart city’ is growing in Greece

“Elliniko”, an ultra-modern city with an area of almost 6 square kilometers, is being built near the center of Athens. It will be almost twice the size of New York’s Central Park and three times the size of Monaco, with the first phase of construction scheduled for completion in 2026.

The project takes its name from the former Ellinikon Airport, which closed in 2001 and is part of the site on which the new city is being built. Previously, this place housed the premises and sports grounds for the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Ellinicon aims to become a “smart city”, which McKinsey defines as a place where data and digital technologies work to improve the quality of life.

It will include high-end shops, restaurants, housing, a sports club, hotels, office space and an extensive public park. The site is currently home to the Ellinikon Experience Center and Park, where visitors can get an idea of what the site will be like in the near future.
