One of Greece’s most prominent contemporary artists, Alekos Fazianos, passed away early Sunday morning at the age of 86. He died at his home surrounded by his wife and two children. In recent years, he had health problems.
The painter captured an entire era with his works.

His paintings have mostly Greek themes such as the sea, boats and birds, dominated by human figures in profile, characterized by simplicity, clear colors, flat compositions with minimal light shading.
Alekos Fazianos was born in Athens in 1935. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Athens in 1960, he moved to Paris to study lithography at the Paris National School of Art, where he met several artists and writers.
Facianos has designed sets for major classical and contemporary productions. His art has been exhibited in museums and galleries, including in Athens, Paris and across Europe, as well as in Tokyo, New York, Sao Paulo and Melbourne.

In addition to private collections, his artworks are in the following museums in France: the Paris Museum of Modern Art; MAEGHT Foundation, St. Paul de Vence; Center for Contemporary Art.
Alekos Fassianos is very popular in Greece and some of his works are exhibited in public places: two large frescoes called “The Myth of My Neighborhood” can be seen in Athens at the Metaxourgeio metro station.
Small sculptures can be seen in front of the Orthodox church of St. Irene in Athens.
Fassianos created illustrations for books by Greek and French poets and writers, was a set designer and costume designer for the National Theatre. In 2000, he created two large murals “Myths of my area” for the Metaxourgio station in the Athens Metro.
A giant vertical mural can be seen in the lobby of the Electra Metropolis Hotel in Athens.
On 13 December 2007, the painting titled The Messenger was sold at Bonhams auction in London for €550,701.
He received several awards in France and one in Russia.
Alekos Fazianos was a member of the Athens Academy of Fine Arts.
Fassianos died at his home surrounded by his family. In recent years, he had health problems. The date of his funeral has not yet been specified.
