On October 9, a frigate expedition started in Piraeus "Standard"

The international historical and educational expedition of the Russian Geographical Society “Flame of Chesma. Greek Gambit” on the sailing frigate “Standart” started on October 9 from the Athenian port of Piraeus.

Over the next two weeks, the participants of the voyage on a ship recreated by volunteers according to drawings and in the traditions of the 18th century, intend to collect little-known facts about the Archipelago province of the Russian Empire on the Greek islands.

The route follows the path of Russian sailors in the Eastern Mediterranean: the port of Piraeus – Paros (capital of the Archipelago province in 1770-1774) – Naxos – Mykonos – Patmos – Chios Strait – Lemnos and Lavrio. During the expedition, underwater research of sunken Russian ships will be carried out, their anchorage sites will be examined, and an examination of previously found artifacts will be carried out.

Speaking on the ship before the start of the expedition, the head of the group for cultural and humanitarian cooperation of the Russian Embassy in Greece Fyodor Kalaydov greeted the participants.

Vladimir Matus invited the inhabitants of the Greek islands, which the expedition will visit, to visit the “Standard” as a maritime museum and even join its voyage as a sailor-trainee.
