Mykonos Ferry Accident: Panic Among Passengers, Suitcases and a Baby Stroller in the Sea (Video)


A ferry accident in the port of Mykonos island shortly after 12pm on Thursday caused panic among passengers disembarking after suitcases and a baby carriage fell into the sea.

According to the report, a man holding a child almost fell into the water, but was saved at the last moment by other passengers who pulled him back in. Some passengers reportedly suffered minor injuries.

In another video, filmed by a passenger on the ferry's deck and shown ANT1 TV channelseveral people can be seen kneeling at the gangway and screams can be heard.


Reportedly Mediathe Cypriot-flagged Jumbo Jet ferry docked at Mykonos port, but the gangway moved, passengers slipped and fell to the ground, after which it was raised, presumably to correct the situation.

The cause of the accident has not yet been officially determined. MEGA TV reported shortly before 8:00 p.m. that the captain told authorities he had accidentally started the ferry, which is why the gangway had moved. The coast guard has launched an investigation. The ferry was traveling on the route Piraeus – Syros – Tinos – Mykonos – Paros – Naxos and back.

Shipping and Island Policy Minister Christos Stylianides said “Safety matters, there are no discounts or compromises in such matters.” The ministry issued a statement saying the systems should improve the safety of coastal shipping.

“In connection with today’s incident in the port of Mykonos, we reiterate that the highest priority of the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy is security issues, especially in coastal shipping, which are non-negotiable and there is no room for tolerance.– the statement says. – In In this context, and in order to strengthen the security of ships, ports and passengers, the Ministry has, among other things, begun to develop a system of time intervals in seaports with a central information system for monitoring and use, adapting ports to the international ISPS code, modernizing port facilities and upgrading the coastal fleet.”
