Ordinary racism: a tourist asked… "throw refugees into the sea"

The incident that caused a public outcry took place on the island of Tilos. Maria Kama responded to a tourist who asked to throw refugees into the sea.

A tourist on the island reacted by showing herself to be a racist when the coastguard rescued a total of 106 refugees, including children, from the island on Wednesday. Tilos Mayor Maria Kamma, who arrived at the scene, gave a clear response to the racist lady.

“This evening, those of us in the port of Tilos have seen both sides of the coin… One hundred and six refugees, many of them children, have been able to cross safely to our island. The scenes I personally witnessed broke me… Men are crying, many of them holding their small children in their arms, thanking the rescuers and trying to kiss their hands… The coastguards are taking the children and the wounded with extreme caution, taking them off the ship.

There were a policeman, doctors and medical staff, as well as residents of the island, on the scene to offer the unfortunate people dry clothes, bread, shoes and anything else they could quickly collect and bring… Unfortunately, there were many children and babies… And suddenly the “lady” began to scream: “KWhy are you carrying them, why are you collecting them??”.

It seemed to me that the woman thought that refugees were being taken somewhere without going through the registration procedure,” and I answered her that “tThat's what happens, madam, the authorities take them to the port administration for registration“.

Oh, no! “Throw them into the sea,” she said, as if cutting off. Such was the wish of the “lady”! Then she began to read me a long lecture, the gist of which was that “we must keep our country and our lands Greek, as we are Christians and “they” have no place here!“.

Drive them out, throw them into the sea that carries them to our islands“, – the tourist was saying. She was cursing the people from the port ship who had just saved 106 human souls! That was their crime! That's why the woman got angry, guys! She was looking at the shore guards who were helping the children get off the boat and she got angry because they didn't speak Greek and weren't Christians!!! We thanked them, and she cursed them!”

And she had the nerve to film me because I dared to tell her how wrong she was. Who are you?! I told her who I was and asked her to tell me her name in return. I don't know if it's real, but I tell her and I repeat it again: “My lady, this island is not for you!“.
