More than six out of ten entrepreneurs (65%) in the region are “slightly” or “not at all satisfied” with the progress of the tourist season in Halkidiki this year, and 52% estimate that it will be worse compared to last year.

In addition, almost seven in ten (68%) say they are facing problems finding staff, and about the same number (69%) say the construction of the flyover in Thessaloniki is affecting travel to Chalkidiki.

The above is taken from the bi-monthly “Chalkidiki Economic Barometer”, compiled by Interview on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Chalkidiki. The survey was conducted in June-July 2024 on a sample of 355 member companies of the Chamber.

Overall, the economic situation index for businesses in Halkidiki was 4.1 points, up significantly from the same period last year (2.1%), but down significantly from the immediately preceding survey in April-May (5.8%). The percentage of entrepreneurs describing their business's financial performance as “moderate” was 46%. Of these, 19% considered it “satisfactory”, 18% “good” and 17% “bad”. The percentage of entrepreneurs reporting an increase in turnover decreased from the previous survey (April-May) (19% from 23%), with 45% of respondents (versus 49% in the previous survey) indicating that their turnover had remained the same, and another 36% (versus 28%) stating that it had decreased.

More than eight in 10 businesses (82% vs. 69% in the previous survey) say they will keep their existing staff next month, while 13% (vs. 30%) say they will hire new ones.

Otherwise, the share of those who expect better results for their business in the next six months falls significantly – to 25% from 51% of the previous wave (April-May survey). The percentage of those who expect the same results is 49% out of 41%, and 26% (out of 8%) believe that the results will be worse.
