Hamas Politburo Chief Ismail Haniyeh Killed in Tehran

Hamas has confirmed the death of Ismail Haniyeh. He arrived in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of President Masoud Pezeshkian. One of his bodyguards was killed along with the Hamas leader.

Hamas blames an Israeli airstrike for the death of its leader. Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard says it is investigating the attack. An Israeli military spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said early Wednesday, July 31, that Haniyeh was killed “in a Zionist airstrike on his residence in Tehran” after he attended the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday along with other Hamas officials, as well as representatives of Hezbollah and its allied groups.

Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were reportedly killed in an attack on his residence in Tehran. The IRGC said an investigation into the incident was underway and the results would be announced later.

Ismail Haniyeh has headed Hamas's political wing since 2017 and is considered the leader of the entire group.
