Croatia: Ex-policeman shoots elderly people in nursing home


A shooting took place in a nursing home in the northern Croatian town of Daruvar. According to preliminary information, five people were killed. The number of injured is unknown.

About it reports Croatian publication Vijesti, official details of the incident have not yet been reported. Local media write that at about 11 a.m., an attacker with a firearm entered a private institution for the elderly and opened fire. Five people died on the spot, and it is not known exactly how many were injured.

The shooter fled the scene, but was soon found and detained in a nearby restaurant. The police are not disclosing details, as the investigation is ongoing. The shooting has already been officially confirmed, and several relevant ministers are heading to the scene of the tragedy. Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic plans to make a special address at 2:00 p.m. local time.

Later, the online publication Index unofficially learned that the attacker was allegedly a 51-year-old former police officer, and that his mother lived in the establishment. The woman was among the dead, and guards and employees were also killed. Bjelovar-Bilogora County Prefect Marko Marušić told HRT that an unprecedented tragedy had occurred:

“We are all in shock, five dead. So I offer my deepest condolences to the families. But the investigation is ongoing. The police are doing their job. The injured have been taken to hospital. We hope that everything will be fine. We will do everything to help. Now we are heading to the city of Daruvar. The ministers are also coming to coordinate, to transfer the remaining beneficiaries to another house, but we are all in shock. Let's now let the police conduct the investigation, then we will have more specific information.”
